Direct Moxibustion

The objective of Oriental Medicine is to balance the human body and to adjust the functions of the body to allow maximum performance. Moxa is a very effective treatment for many diseases ranging from deep internal cold to acute hot inflammation. The skillful and appropriate use of moxa can be extremely effective and efficient providing immediate and long-lasting effects in bringing the body into homeostasis. In addition, the regular use of moxa can prevent illness.

Actions of Moxibustion

  • Thermal effect - moxibustion gives off a special wavelength of light like an infrared beam
  • Chemical effects - Histotoxin (denatured proteins) is produced and released in the serum
    • Increases calcium ions and decreases magnesium ions
    • Doubles white blood cell count - returns to normal on the next day. Apply moxa for 6 weeks and the white blood cell count does not come down for 13 weeks.
    • Increases red blood cell count (hemoglobin) - There will be no change for 6 weeks, then the count gradually increases and becomes maximum by 8 weeks returning to a normal level 6 months later.
    • Blood platelets - increase remarkably, returns to normal level in 24 - 48 hours.
    • Blood-sugar level - becomes maximum in 30 minutes (250%). Returns to normal level in 2-3 days.
    • Blood coagulation time - is shortened in 30 minutes. Returns to a normal level in 24 hours.
    • Carbon Dioxide in the blood - leads to alkalosis (abnormally high alkalinity - low hydrogen-ion concentration - of the blood and other body tissues), and suppresses acidosis (A condition in which the blood is too acidic).
    • Expands peripheral circulation as the function of the heart increases.
    • Function of the adrenal gland - Moxibustion increases its activity which is good for auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and allergies. (Acupuncture decreases its activity which is good for high blood pressure and heart disease.)
